Transportation center of Cochise County

Since 1880, Benson has been the transportation center of Cochise County, when the Southern Pacific Railroad was built making Benson the only town with transcontinental connection in the area. In the 1920s, then-US Route 80 was built from Washington D.C. to San Diego running through downtown Benson.
